Why Check Your Brand's AI Visibility?
AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are increasingly becoming the first point of contact for consumers and business customers. When someone asks: "Which provider is best for [your service]?" or "Who offers [your product] in Germany?", the AI model's answer determines whether your brand is mentioned or not.
Unlike Google, there is no "Search Console for AI". You can't simply log in and see how often your brand appears in AI responses. A manual or automated audit is the only way to establish a baseline.
This guide shows you step by step how to check your brand's AI visibility — without prior knowledge and without expensive tools.
Step 1: Select the Right AI Models
Not every AI platform is equally relevant for your industry. For an initial audit, we recommend these five:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) — the most widely used AI chatbot worldwide. If your brand doesn't appear here, it's missing from the most important channel.
- Claude (Anthropic) — particularly used for professional and analytical questions. Widely distributed in Europe.
- Gemini (Google) — deeply integrated into Google's ecosystem. Responses often appear in Google's AI Overviews.
- Perplexity — positions itself as an answer engine with source citations. The best comparability with traditional search results.
- Mistral (Le Chat) — European alternative, growing rapidly in German-speaking regions.
Step 2: Prepare the Right Questions
The quality of your audit depends on the questions you ask. Create a list of 20 to 30 questions from three categories:
Category Questions
"Best provider for [your industry]" or "Top [your product category] in Germany" — these questions show whether your brand is perceived as a relevant provider.
Problem Questions
"How do I solve [your customer's problem]?" — these questions show whether your brand is found when someone searches for a solution.
Comparison Questions
"[Competitor A] vs [Competitor B]" — these questions show how the AI positions your brand in comparison.
Important: For the initial audit, use questions that do not explicitly mention your brand name. Otherwise, you're only measuring whether the AI repeats your name, not whether it truly knows you.
Step 3: Conduct the Audit
You have two options:
Manual Audit
- Open each AI model in a separate browser tab.
- Enter each question and wait for the complete response.
- Note for each question: Was your brand mentioned? (Yes/No)
- If yes: At what position? (First, second, third?)
- Which competitors were mentioned instead?
- Was the mention positive, neutral, or negative?
The manual audit takes about 2-3 hours for 30 questions and 5 AI models. It's educational, but time-consuming for regular audits.
Automated Audit
Specialized platforms like AI Labs Audit handle all data collection automatically. You enter your questions once, and the platform queries all AI models simultaneously. Results are prepared in standardized metrics. This saves time and enables regular repeat audits.
Step 4: Understand the Results
Four metrics help you evaluate your AI visibility:
Mention Rate
The percentage of questions where your brand is mentioned. Example: Mentioned in 12 out of 30 questions = 40%. Below 10% is very low, above 60% shows a strong position.
Citation Position
Not all mentions are equal. Being mentioned in first place is more valuable than a mention at the end of a list.
AI Share-of-Voice (SoV)
Your share of all brand mentions in your industry. If three competitors are each mentioned 30% of the time and you're at 10%, your SoV is 10%. This metric shows your market position.
Mention Sentiment
Is your brand described positively, neutrally, or negatively? A mention like "Company X is often criticized for poor service" is not a good mention.
Step 5: Check Technical Prerequisites
AI models draw information from your website. Check the following points:
- Structured Data (Schema.org): Does your website contain the right schema types (Organization, Product, FAQ)?
- Robots.txt: Are AI crawlers allowed to read your most important pages?
- Fresh Content: AI models prefer current content. Pages that haven't been updated for over 12 months are cited less frequently.
- Multilingualism: Does your website serve the right language for your target market?
A complete technical audit includes 26 to 34 individual checks, as documented in the GEO checklist from AI Labs Audit.
Step 6: Derive Actions
Based on your audit, prioritize your actions:
- Close Critical Gaps: If you're invisible on an important AI platform, work first on getting cited there.
- Correct Hallucinations: If AI models spread false information about your brand (invented URLs, false certifications), respond immediately.
- Strengthen Technical Foundations: Schema markup, robots.txt, and fresh content are the foundation for any AI visibility.
- Create Citable Content: Publish well-structured guides, FAQ pages, and tutorials that AI models can use as sources.
- Audit Regularly: Repeat the audit monthly. AI models change frequently, and your visibility can change without warning.
Helpful Tools
For an initial audit, a browser and a spreadsheet are sufficient. For regular, standardized audits, there are specialized platforms. AI Labs Audit offers automated audits with 50+ AI models, 6-dimensional evaluation (AGS methodology), and detailed reports. The Discover plan is free and includes 100 credits per month — enough for an initial audit of your brand.
Every question asked to ChatGPT without your name in the answer is a competitor recommended instead of you — measured across 6,820 real AI answers.
