When AI omits your brand, a competitor takes your place

Not appearing in an AI answer is not neutral: the spot does not stay empty. We measured what takes your place. The answer: a competitor.

The scope

We analysed 3,002 AI answers from real audits, detecting both the presence of the audited brand and that of its competitors (entity detection on the produced text). This answers a simple question: when the brand is not there, who is?

The finding

42%
of answers cite at least one competitor
37%
of answers WITHOUT the brand still contain a competitor
4.6
competitors named on average, when there are any

Four answers in ten name at least one competitor. And crucially: when your brand does not appear, in more than a third of cases a competitor does. Your absence is not a blank — it is a recommendation handed to a rival. On average, it is not one but nearly five competitors that are cited.

Why this is the real stake

We often focus on the rank or tone of a mention. But the battle happens before: getting into the answer. Once cited, you are rarely poorly placed (we measure an average position around 2 in our barometer). The real risk is not being there at all — and letting the AI confidently recommend someone else to your customer.

What it changes

Tracking AI visibility is not only counting yourself: it is measuring the gap with the competitors who hold the ground in your place, model by model. And since this presence varies by which AI is asked (see our study on disagreement between models), it must be measured everywhere. The Observatory and our methodology detail the approach — share of voice included.

The limits of these figures

This data comes from brands that chose to audit themselves — not a representative sample. Competitor detection depends on entity-extraction quality; we count presence, not recommendation intensity. Rates evolve with the models.

Want to know which competitors AIs recommend in your place — and on which models? That is exactly what a share-of-voice audit measures.
